In a prolific career spanning more than 50 years, Harlan Ellison has been the acclaimed master of speculative fiction. In addition to his dozens of Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards, Ellison has won two Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America, and multiple Bram Stoker Awards from the Horror Writers Association (including the Lifetime Achievement Award). Shatterday Other Stories The Voice from the Edge Volume 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Harlan Ellison Max Caufield John Rubenstein Kris Tabori Stefan Rudnicki Audible Studios Books Reviews
The All-Singing, All Dancing, Extremely Entertaining Audio Ellison#5
Having recently purchased -- and seriously enjoyed the hell out of -- Vol. 4 & vol. 5 of Ellison's "The Voice From the Edge" series of Audio book/story & essay collections, I was moved to listen to the first three volumes (purchased as each one came out, earlier this century).
From the moment Ellison's gravely, inflection-filled -- sound-effects and accent-capable -- voice begins narrating "Delusion for a Dragon Slayer", readers will know they are in the hands of a master storyteller. That adjective -- storyteller -- is too often misused. It should be saved ONLY for stories actually TOLD -- or READ -- by someone. And as those who have been purchasing his fine, small imprint, recordings for decades already know, Ellison is top-notch. And these Voice From the Edge books (all now published by Audible) are as good as it gets when it comes to audio books, and the quality of readers (Vol.s 1-3 are ALL narrated by Ellison Vol. 4 and Vol. 5 contain the work of other narrators, but they, too, are equally adept). "Delusion..", like most Ellison stories, starts with a bang, as the protagonist is killed in the first few pages -- only to be knocked into several alternative universes (or are they afterlives?). When Ellison says "you have to earn your dreams", it rings doubly true knowing the author himself has done that many times over. The guest narrators do a bang-up job with stories like "Shatterday" (in fact, the English narrator actually _sounds_ a little like Bruce Willis -- who played the Novins character in a teleplay version on the 1980s "reboot" of "The Twilight Zone"), "Basilisk" (an antiwar story), "Adrift Just Off the Islets of Langerhans..." (in which a man named Talbot goes in search of his soul, enlisting the help one Victor Frankenstein), and "All the Lies That Are My Life" (an autobiographical novella that deals with a charismatic writer of genre fiction and the shattered remains of his life and legacy). Along with "Delusion..", Ellison lends his voice -- in volume four -- to "Flop Sweat" (and an interesting introduction about how the story came to be written), a horror story about the ultimate evil coming to worship at its proper altar, "In the Oligocenskie Gardens", a short-short from his criminally overlooked MINDFIELDS collection, "Shattered Like a Glass Goblin", "On the Downhill Side" (the BEST story about true love ever written), "Susan" (a bittersweet valentine to his wife, and another from MINDFIELDS) and, last but not least, "Goodbye to All That", a Nebula-nominated short story that, apparently (according to his introduction piece), just a LOT of people didn't reall "get". (Which puzzles me because I "got it" right away, but then I understand whimsy, mirth, and many other forms of the language of humor). If Ellison's reading of "Goodbye to All That" doesn't make you laugh, there's no hope for your funny bone. And it won't be hard to notice that Ellison seems to truly tear up whilst reading "Susan" (a lover's lament for more time) and if that doesn't touch you just a bit, there's no hope for your heart.
I'd never read this author before but I've seen several tv shows from his scripts which I enjoyed.
This collection was okay but I would buy it again.
