The Expedition of Humphry Clinker T Smollett 9781544832395 Books
I've read it three times before, always in highschool or college. I picked it up in a Kindle version again recently. It did not disappoint. I come to the story with the worldly wisdom of a 75 year old man and the writing and the carryings-on are delicious. Tobias Smollett was a formidable writer. The kindle version has excellent links to explanations of terms that had a different usage in the late 18th century when the story was written, and, yes, a good linking system to get back to where you were.Product details

The Expedition of Humphry Clinker T Smollett 9781544832395 Books Reviews
This is certainly not for everyone, but if you find 18th century literature interesting and like the form of epistolary novels, then give this a try. I also find it interesting to read works that later writers of the 19th century may have read and were influenced by.
Thoroughly enjoyed the nonsense. Also, Bath and London sound like horrible places to live. This book was light-hearted, which was really a pleasant surprise.
The story of three couples' courtships while traveling around Great Britain. Between false identities and difference in class love still manages to win out.
I challenge anyone to read this picaresque travelogue and not be overcome with laughter in at least three places. I don't care how jaded and well-read you may (or may not) be. If you have even a pittance of sense for the absurdities of the human situation, this book will catch you unawares in its jabbing yet light-hearted apercus to which every mortal can relate---Unless you are one particular reviewer who seems to have stepped out of Victorian spinsterhood to berate Smollett for a Swiftean obsession with dirt, which is twaddle and tripe. This aspect forms only a small part of the novel as a whole. But I digress; this review shall not become an assault on Victorian spinsterhood.
If this book reminds me of anything (besides earlier Smollett works), it is the lighter plays of Shakespeare such as Much Ado About Nothing and All's Well That Ends Well, particularly the former, full of coincidences bordering on farce, and ending, well, like Much Ado about Nothing ends, if you'll recall the last scene.
I'm not equating Smollett with Shakespeare. But I AM saying that Humphrey Clinker is just as funny, warm hearted and insightful regarding the human condition as these plays, just perhaps a bit less profound and virtuosic.
Enough said, these long-winded reviews drive one batty. Read this book and have some fun, and come away reflecting on the foibles of us all.
Mathew Bramble,a quick-tempered, large-hearted English squire decides to tour England and Scotland by coach in the company of his family and servants.Set in early nineteenth century England, this delightful novel consists entirely of a set of letters penned by individual members of the entourage to their respective friends and associates at home.
The novel gradually unfolds the quirks and foibles of each character, humorous as well as engaging. The journey itself is full of unexpected events, and holds the interest of the reader till the very end.The observations and commentary of the squire on the society he encounters are penetrating and thought-provoking and provide an insight ito English society of that time.
This is a book that can be read again-- and again. It also establishes Smollett as one of the great English novelists of all time.
I read this book because a commentary on Adam Smiths Wealth of Nations by P.J. O'Rourke told the reader it would give insight on England/Scotland of the time. It sort of does. It is composed as a series of letters written during a trip into northern England then Scotland. Several people write and their vocabulary and phrasing varies depending on who is supposed to be writing. It provides some social and political commentary and also gives a view of Scotland of 250 years back. I enjoyed it. Many would not. Whoever reads this found reference to the book somehere and went looking for it. That means it is worth starting, at least.
I just received this book. What a disappointment.
The book I ordered is pictured on having a cover depicting a pile of old books. On the page for the product the publisher is given as CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. So the product received is a handsome paperback with a handsome cover. Inside there is NOTHING but the text of the novel. That is, there is not even an indication of the publisher! The title of the book, and its author, are displayed three times on two otherwise blank pages. Then the first page of the novel appears. On the last page of the book is displayed "Made in the USA. Lexington KY. 26 December 2012". Note the date. This is the day I ORDERED the book. Hence, it was printed after I ordered, and mailed to me.
Look, this novel, first published in 1771, is not a particularly easy read, if someone is coming at it with little or no knowledge of the author, the year that it was published, difficult words in the text, what have you. Other editions of the book available on universally have some sort of introduction, or forward, or glossary or SOMETHING to help the reader get oriented. (These from real publishing houses, of course.)
The only reason you should CONSIDER purchasing this product is if price is your ONLY criteria. It probably is the cheapest print edition of the book available on . (BUT NOTE if you have a , the e-book is available FREE, and the edition (presumably a bare-bones text) would have absolutely NO LESS information than this edition.)
Follow up agreed to refund the price I paid for the book. Can't complain about that sort of customer service!
